Institute ‘Mihailo Pupin’, now collection of Museum of Science and Technology, Belgrade, c. 1964
The first model of a multifunctional externally powered hand prosthesis known as the ‘Belgrade Hand Prosthesis’ was developed by Prof. Rajko Tomović and Prof. Milan Rakić in the Institute ‘Mihailo Pupin’ in Belgrade in 1964, and in the course of 1966–67 an improved model was developed. It demonstrated a principle of a hand that could adapt automatically to the shape of an object to be grasped. It is early example of true anthropomorphic, 5-digit human-like designs of a robotic hand.
